Mansard Loft Hertford

This Hertford townhouse had generous roof volume but insufficient headroom for a conventional loft room. A mansard conversion was the natural choice — creating near-vertical rear walls, maximising floor area, and delivering ceiling heights comparable to the floors below.

We developed a mansard design with slate-clad cheeks, dormer windows facing the garden, and a layout accommodating two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Planning permission was secured with drawings that respected the conservation context of the surrounding street.

Structural works included new floor joists, a steel frame at the rear elevation, and careful sequencing to maintain weather protection throughout the build. The finished mansard feels like an original storey — not an afterthought — with consistent finishes and integrated storage throughout.
