Our Hitchin clients wanted to give their teenager a private bedroom without extending the house — the existing attic had adequate headroom at the centre but no natural light and no fixed staircase. A roof light conversion was the most efficient route to a usable room.
We installed three rooflights along the ridge to distribute daylight evenly across the room, with one unit specified as a top-hung escape window to meet building regulations. Insulation was upgraded throughout the roof slopes and floor, bringing thermal performance in line with current standards.
The new staircase uses a compact paddle design landing above the existing first-floor hallway, preserving headroom below. Built-in desk joinery and eaves shelving create a study area alongside the bed, giving the room flexibility as the family's needs evolve.
